Greenhough

Greenhough is an artisan winery based in Hope, Nelson, at the top of New Zealand’s South Island. Its story began in late 1990 when Andrew Greenhough and Jenny Wheeler left Auckland and settled on a four-hectare property where vines and a small winery had already been established in the 1970s. Over the following decades, they reshaped the vineyards around varieties particularly suited to Nelson, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. Their dedication has helped Greenhough develop a distinctive identity centred on mature vines, thoughtful viticulture and wines that reflect the character of their origins.
Greenhough’s home vineyard lies on an elevated terrace of the Waimea Plains, where clay-rich alluvial soils over free-draining gravels combine with Nelson’s cool maritime influence and abundant sunshine to provide favourable conditions for slow, balanced ripening. The estate began converting to organic farming in 2008 and achieved full BioGro New Zealand organic certification in 2011, eliminating herbicides, insecticides, systemic fungicides and chemical fertilisers while encouraging soil health and biodiversity. In the winery, low yields, small-batch production and minimal intervention are used to preserve fruit quality and vineyard character. The result is a range of expressive Nelson wines defined by freshness, texture and a strong sense of place.
