Opus One

Opus One was founded in 1979 from the visionary partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild, proprietor of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, and Robert Mondavi, one of the pioneering figures of Napa Valley. United by a shared ambition to create an exceptional wine in the heart of Napa Valley, they brought together the traditions and refinement of Bordeaux with the innovation and character of California winemaking. Their collaboration created a unique Franco-American legacy centred on a single pursuit: uncompromising quality. The purpose-built Opus One winery, whose construction was completed in Oakville in 1991, remains an enduring expression of this vision and partnership.
Located in Oakville, Napa Valley, Opus One draws principally from estate vineyards planted on alluvial soils in the western part of the appellation, including vineyards associated with the celebrated To Kalon area. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the foundation of Opus One, traditionally complemented by other classic Bordeaux varieties. Meticulous vineyard management and precise winemaking produce wines that balance power and finesse, structure and texture, with the depth and longevity expected of one of Napa Valley’s most prestigious wines. Across each vintage, Opus One continues to express the founders’ distinctive union of French heritage and Napa Valley terroir.
