Giuseppe Mascarello

Founded in 1881 by Giuseppe Mascarello, Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio is one of the historic family estates of the Langhe, with more than a century of winemaking tradition. A defining moment came in 1904, when Giuseppe’s son Maurizio acquired a farm in the celebrated Monprivato vineyard in Castiglione Falletto and began producing Barolo from the site. The family’s connection with Monprivato has continued for generations, with Mauro Mascarello introducing separate vinification of the vineyard in 1970. Today, the estate encompasses approximately 15 hectares across the Barolo region while remaining firmly rooted in the traditional philosophy passed down through the Mascarello family.

At the heart of the estate is Monprivato, a historic six-hectare vineyard documented in land records as early as 1666 and recognised by Renato Ratti in 1985 among the eleven first-category historic vineyards of Barolo. The Mascarello family has owned vines here since 1904 and today is the sole producer to bottle Barolo under the Monprivato name. Winemaking remains resolutely traditional, with long, gentle macerations followed by maturation in large Slavonian oak casks, allowing Nebbiolo and its terroir to take centre stage. Known for its remarkable elegance, complexity and capacity for long ageing, Monprivato embodies the philosophy that has made Giuseppe Mascarello one of the enduring reference points for traditionally styled Barolo.
